Purple People Eater Mix

"It was a one-eye, one-horn flying, purple people eater!"  I remember loving this song as kid.  (Who am I kidding?  I love it even now.)  After listening to it on Pandora, I had a sudden urge to make a purple people eater-themed treat (as if there isn't way too much junk food around during Halloween).
I used a the basic recipe for Christmas Crack.  It is caramel-y goodness in your mouth!  Basically, I used things that I already had around the house and it worked out beautifully.

I put some in a cup for Bud.

Bud approves!

Purple People Eater Mix
6-8 c Honey Nut Cheerios
1 1/2 c butter
2 c sugar
2 c corn syrup
neon purple food coloring (or mix red and blue; I just happened to have neon purple)
2 c marshmallows
1 bag chocolate chips
black and orange sprinkles

Measure out your Honey Nut Cheerios and put them onto a lightly sprayed cookie sheet.  In a large sauce pan cook butter, sugar, and corn syrup to soft ball stage (about 230 degrees on a candy thermometer).  Add food coloring to your desired color.  Pour over the cereal.  If the mix is too sticky add more Honey Nut Cheerios.  Mix with a wooden spoon until all of the Cheerios are covered.  Let cool.  When completely cooled, add marshmallows, chocolate chips, and sprinkles.  Enjoy!

My hubby thought that it was going to be fruit-flavored due to the purple coloring.  Have fun throwing people off!

General Conference Snack Mix

Conference weekend is finally here!

This also means that I have been putting together some activities/snacks that will help my kiddos focus and listen.

We will start off our Saturday morning session with a General Conference Mix to snack on.

Each family member will be given this printable (feel free to print one out for yourself).  They must hear the words associated with each snack before they can eat it.

I think this will work pretty well for Princess and Goofy.  Bud, on the other hand, will probably just eat whatever he can get his hands on.

What are some of your favorite General Conference traditions and/or treats?

Red, White, & Blue Smoothie

Happy 4th of July!

I made super fun chocolate-dipped strawberries for my kids to eat for lunch.  I have been on a bit of a health kick (they come and go) and so I wanted to make something festive, and also healthy.

Enter the red, white, and blue smoothie.  Let's take a closer look.

You will need 12 oz milk, 1 T flax seed, 1 ripe banana, 1 t sweetener of your choice, a dash of cinnamon, 2 handfuls frozen blueberries, and 6-7 frozen strawberries.  Blend until it is the desired consistency and enjoy!

It was absolutely delicious!

Peanut Butter Chex

I have a little Christmas present for you.  I am going to share the recipe for one of my favorite Christmas treats: Peanut Butter Chex.

If you are a sweet tooth - this will hit the spot.

If you are a peanut butter lover - you're in for a treat.

If you are a gluten free eater - share this tasty snack at a party or movie night.  You can't go wrong!

Peanut Butter Chex
1 c smooth peanut butter
1 c granulated sugar
1 c light corn syrup
6 c Chex cereal

Put Chex cereal into a large bowl.  Pour sugar and corn syrup into a pot.  Cook on stove top until boiling and sugar dissolves.  Quickly add peanut butter and mix until smooth.  Pour peanut butter mixture over the top of the Chex cereal.  Using a spatula or wooden spoon, mix until evenly coated.  Line a jellyroll pan with wax paper.  Press peanut butter Chex onto wax paper and allow to cool.

Would you just look at that?!  Heaven on a jellyroll pan.  I love to eat it when it's nice and warm.

We decided to give peanut butter Chex out as a treat to the neighbors this year.

We were able to fill 5 little gift bags (and would have been able to do one more if we hadn't been scarfing it down).

I also wanted to show you the little tag that I made on PicMonkey.  If you haven't ever used PicMonkey, give it a try.  I love it!

Merry Christmas!  Enjoy your Peanut Butter Chex!

Refrigerator Snack Box

"Mom!  I'm hungry!  I want something to eat!"

Anyone else's kids constantly whine about food?

When my kids got hungry I usually gave them whatever I could grab quickly.  This included fruit snacks, crackers, cookies, and even candy.  I wanted to be better - to have healthy snacks at their fingertips.

Behold!  My solution.

I purchased this set of drawers at Walmart.  It fits perfectly on my bottom shelf.

Each child has a drawer.  At the beginning of the week I fill it with all sorts of snacks: oranges, grapes, string cheese, apple slices, baby carrots, Gogurt, etc.

Now, whenever my children are hungry, I direct them to their drawers.  Not only does it save me from the whining, the snacks are healthier as well.

This solution may not work for everyone, but it has been a marvel for me.

How do you organize your refrigerator?  What are some of your kids' favorite snacks?
