Humpty Dumpty Preschool Lesson

I have been in a preschool rotation with some of my friends.  Last month I taught my last lesson.  I thought I would share some of the things I taught in hopes that you might be able to use some of these ideas with your preschoolers.

I was in charge of teaching the fairy tales and nursery rhymes unit.  So fun!  Today I'm going to tell you about the Humpty Dumpty portion of my lesson.

Reading/Singing Time: I started off by reading Humpty Dumpty with the kids.  I taught them the words, then we sang it together.  The song I taught them was the Humpty Dumpty song in the Reader's Digest Children's Songbook.  (I LOVE this book!) 

Capital H Practice:   We discussed the letter H, the sound that it makes, and where it appears in the poem.  We practiced writing capital H's on white boards.

Position Words/Counting: I gave each child a Humpty Dumpty and told them to put it anywhere by the wall.  We then talked about the words off and on.  I asked them to count how many Humpty Dumpties were sitting on the wall.  They also counted how many were not on the wall.

Teamwork Activity: I gave each child a piece of this Humpty Dumpty puzzle.  I said to them, "All of the king's horses and all of the king's men couldn't put Humpty Dumpty together again.  Do you think you can?"  They then helped each other and put the puzzle together.

Art Activity:  Using styrofoam eggs, glitter glue, pipe cleaners, pom-poms, jiggly eyes, and a glue gun we made little Humpty Dumpties.  We made a red wall out of paper for them to stick their Humpty Dumpty on (yet more position word practice).

Didn't they turn out so cute?!  Some of the kids put multiple noses on their Humpty Dumpties.  It was fun to see how they all turned out.  The kids were assigned to put their Humpty Dumpty on 3 different things at home and to take them off of those things.
