Agency FHE Lesson

Tonight's lesson was taken from the Gospel Principles Manual lesson #4: Freedom to Choose.

In our Premortal Life Lesson last week we talked about the war in Heaven.  I asked the kids if they remembered what it was we fought for.  Princess surprised me by saying, "Being able to make a choice."  I told her that was exactly right and that the word for being able to make choices is agency.

We talked a little about the importance of making good choices.  To help the kids practice making good choices I set up a life-size board game on the floor.  It was our Choose the Right Agency Game.

This is the start of the game.  The kids rolled a dice to move to different spaces.

More of the game layout.  It's pretty obvious which way they were supposed to go (kind of like the straight and narrow path right?).  Notice at certain points there are junctions.  This is where the choices must be made.

 If the kids made a wrong choice the game sent them to the couch.

At the couch we talked a little about the atonement and the importance of repentance.  Once they repented they could go back to the start of the game.

It stopped at the front door.  Here is a closer look at what was on the front door.

I explained that as we make good choices we become more like Jesus Christ and can eventually return to live with Him someday.

She was more interested in rolling the dice for Princess.

Princess loved talking about the different choices she could make.  They were fairly simple choices for the kids to make.  Here are a few examples:

• Mommy made cookies and told you not to take any.  What do you do?  - Eat one or obey mommy? 
• Daddy asked you to pick up the toys.  What do you do? - Keep playing or pick up the toys?
• Your sister wants to play with your new toy.  What do you do? - Share or not let her play with it?
• You are at church.  What do you do? - Run around screaming or sit quietly and fold your arms?

Sharing the dice--I'd say that's a good choice.

Princess chose not to keep the Sabbath Day holy.  We had a nice little talk about the importance of Sunday and how God has commanded us to keep it holy and worship Him.  She repented and started the game over.

When she made it to Eternal Life, Princess put her face right up against the door and stared at Jesus.  She was so happy.  It was as if she was trying to get as close to Him as she could.  It was a sweet moment that I will cherish forever.

After a couple of rounds of the game I gave these little bags of jelly beans to everyone.  They say "Thank you for 'Chew-sing' the Right."
