"It was a one-eye, one-horn flying, purple people eater!" I remember loving this song as kid. (Who am I kidding? I love it even now.) After listening to it on Pandora, I had a sudden urge to make a purple people eater-themed treat (as if there isn't way too much junk food around during Halloween).
I used a the basic recipe for Christmas Crack. It is caramel-y goodness in your mouth! Basically, I used things that I already had around the house and it worked out beautifully.
I put some in a cup for Bud.
Bud approves!
Purple People Eater Mix
6-8 c Honey Nut Cheerios
1 1/2 c butter
2 c sugar
2 c corn syrup
neon purple food coloring (or mix red and blue; I just happened to have neon purple)
2 c marshmallows
1 bag chocolate chips
black and orange sprinkles
Directions
Measure out your Honey Nut Cheerios and put them onto a lightly sprayed cookie sheet. In a large sauce pan cook butter, sugar, and corn syrup to soft ball stage (about 230 degrees on a candy thermometer). Add food coloring to your desired color. Pour over the cereal. If the mix is too sticky add more Honey Nut Cheerios. Mix with a wooden spoon until all of the Cheerios are covered. Let cool. When completely cooled, add marshmallows, chocolate chips, and sprinkles. Enjoy!
My hubby thought that it was going to be fruit-flavored due to the purple coloring. Have fun throwing people off!
