Pioneer Day Covered Wagon and Oxen

I am going to attempt to do some major catching up on the blog as well as putting up some crafts for the holiday season.  Here is my first catch-up post:

In Utah the 24th of July is celebrated to remember our pioneer ancestors coming across the plains for religious freedom.  Each year our we have a pioneer parade and with our neighbors.  The kids are encouraged to decorate their bikes, scooters, etc. for the parade.  This year, we decided to make a covered wagon.

First, we made our covered wagon by tying an old sheet to the top of the stroller.  We needed some oxen to pull the wagon.  Luckily, the kids were willing to accept the job.  Using construction paper, I made a headband for each of my kids.  I cut out the horns and ears from craft foam and stapled them to the headbands.  My kids were so excited to put on their hats.  I couldn't get them to take them off!  Finally, we attached a jump rope to the stroller so the "oxen" could pull the wagon.

The girls had to work together as they pulled our littlest oxen in the covered wagon to the park.  It was a great opportunity to teach the children that the pioneers also had to use teamwork to get to Utah.
