Color! Color! Color!

One of my favorite units to teach Princess' preschool group last year was on color.  Pinterest was a lifesaver for this lesson.  First, I talked with the kids about all of the different colors of the rainbow,  primary and secondary colors, and mixing colors.  I used this color wheel to help the kids visualize the relationship between primary and secondary colors.

Next, we played a game I invented. I hung streamers from the ceiling (one streamer for every color of the rainbow) clear down to the floor.  I would then shout out a color or say, "A primary color!  A secondary color!  Etc."  The kids would run to a streamer that fit the description as fast as they could. The kids loved the game and we played for a long time.  I wish I would have thought to take pictures!

We did a color science experiment I saw on Pinterest next.  You fill a bowl with milk and add a drop of food coloring of each of the primary colors to opposite sides of the bowl.  Then you squirt in some dish soap and watch the magic happen.  The colors start to mix before your eyes!

The kids took notes of their observations.

For snack time we ate a fruit rainbow and I made some magical color changing drinks.  All you do is put a drop of food coloring of different colors at the bottom of some clear plastic cups.  Allow food coloring to dry.  When you are ready to serve you pour a cup of clear liquid over the food coloring.  The colors will all be different and the kids will be amazed.

Aren't colors fun?

After snack time we did some color lacing cards, talked about warm and cool colors, and made color patterns.  This site gave me the inspiration to make lacing cards.

I got the idea to make the warm and cool color pattern sheets from these cute pattern pom-pom caterpillars.  Princess loves the lacing cards and Goofy loves the pom-poms that go with the color pattern sheets.

We finished off the day with this wonderful color spectrum song I found on YouTube.com  The kids had so much fun trying to run to the different colored streamers as fast as Professor Ludwig Von Drake sings them.  We did this over and over again.  Enjoy the video!
