Our Heavenly Family - FHE Lesson

As a mom with a preschooler, toddler, and baby getting everyone excited about family home evening can be a real chore.  Getting them to even sit still for a lesson is a hassle.  I'm sure all of you moms out there know what I'm talking about.  That's why I was so pleasantly surprised with this lesson.  My kids absolutely loved it and didn't want to stop to go to bed.  (Picture me doing a little victory dance!)  If your kids like to draw, they will LOVE this lesson.

We started the lesson asking the kids if they remember who we've been talking about the last few family home evenings (answer: Heavenly Father).  I then showed them this super cute Plan of Salvation Diagram.

We talked briefly about the plan of salvation, but focused most of the discussion on premortal life, birth, and earth life.  In the Gospel Principles manual it talks about our spirits dwelling with Heavenly Father in the premortal life.  It tells us that our spirits grew to maturity and were all different.  We had different talents, likes, and dislikes just like we do here on earth.

For our activity I wanted the kids to focus on the things that make them special and different.  Here's the set up:

I brought the girls' painting easel and a chair downstairs.  I set a pot on a chair and set a flashlight on it.

The pot didn't hold the flashlight quite where I wanted it, so Princess held the light up for us.  We drew our silhouettes on the paper.

Then, we drew the things that make us special inside our silhouette.

Goofy loved this activity.

Princess coloring away.

Even Hubby seemed to have fun coloring his silhouette (which really surprised me).

Can you guess who's who?

Bud didn't make one, but he was super good for the whole lesson and activity.

Such a sweet boy!

Answers:
#1. Princess

#2. Hubby

#3. Goofy (She wouldn't sit still long enough for me to take her picture, so here she is coloring it.)

#4. Me

The kids cried when I put the crayons away.  When I woke up the next day, the first thing Princess said to me was, "Thanks for the fun family home evening mom."  What could be better than that?!

  1. This worked so well as a last minute FHE lesson: thank you! It was nice to have Toddler Princess help others figure out ways they were special, but my favorite was her writing the word love and drawing a picture of God's throne and angels in heaven because "I'm special because I have love from Heaven in me."
