The theme for Goofy's 2nd birthday the theme was owls. Look WHOOO's two! Naturally, I had to make an owl cake. I am no professional cake decorator by any means, but this cake turned out so cute I just had to share how to make it.
First, I made a cake (from a cake mix--I'm lazy like that) in a 9" x 13" pan. I let it cool over night in the refrigerator.
I cut the cake to look like a tulip without the middle petal. Then, I frosted the cake with a crumb coat of frosting. I used my favorite vanilla butter frosting (recipe at the bottom). Back into the fridge it went.
Once it had chilled it was time to decorate. I learned a frosting tip from Pinterest: if you whip up your canister of frosting in a mixer for a few minutes you can double the size of your frosting. I whipped up my chocolate frosting, dyed my extra vanilla butter frosting orange and pink, and made my owl. My mom taught me that if you slightly wet your knife you can smooth your frosting.
After I frosted and piped the lettering I used some Hershey's Drops for the owl's pupils. Here's a little shout out to my hubby for finding them. They were the perfect size!
I tied a bow and stuck it on the owl's head to make it a girl. You could make a bow tie for a boy.
And there you have it. A cute little owl cake. Do you have any other cake decorating tips? Share them with me (I can use all the help I can get).
Vanilla Butter Frosting
1/2 c soft butter or margarine
3 c confectioners' sugar
1 1/2 t vanilla
2 T milk
Blend butter and sugar. Stir in vanilla and milk; beat until frosting is smooth and of spreading consistency. Add more sugar or milk to get the desired consistency. I like mine to make stiff peaks that don't sink.
