The Priesthood FHE Lesson

Lately Goofy has had a bit of an attitude - especially with her daddy.  I was glad to open my Gospel Principles Manual and see that Chapter 13 was about the priesthood.

I started off the lesson by having all of the kids look at their daddy.  I told them that their daddy was very special.  He has something that no one else in our family has.  I asked them, "What do you think daddy has that the rest of us don't?"  It took them a little while, but Princess finally did come up with the right answer: the priesthood.

Princess put up the word "priesthood" on our chalkboard.

I then told them that I had 5 questions about the priesthood that we would answer together.

Goofy put up the first question for us.

Question #1: What is the priesthood?  According to the Gospel Principles manual, the priesthood is the eternal power and authority of God.  Heavenly Father delegates that power to worthy male members of the church.

Question #2: Why do we need the priesthood on Earth? We must have the authority to act in the name of God when performing sacred ordinances of the church such as baptism, confirmation, administration of the sacrament, and temple ordinances.  Men need the priesthood to preside in the church.  We need it so that we can understand the will of God and carry out His purposes.  Men with the priesthood can give blessings as well - blessing babies, blessing the sick, Father’s blessings. The priesthood is so important!

Question #3: How do men receive the priesthood? I held up picture of Jesus.  Jesus gave the power of the priesthood to his apostles in ancient times. We then watched a video about Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery.

I held up pictures of Joseph Smith getting both the Aaronic and Melchizedek priesthood.  Men are given the priesthood by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority to preach the gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.  (Article of Faith #4)

Question #4: How do men properly use the priesthood? I explained that the priesthood should be used to bless the lives of Heavenly Father’s children on Earth.  Priesthood leaders should preside and love in kindness.

Question #5: What blessings come when we use the priesthood properly? I told the kids that priesthood holders can have confidence and the Holy Ghost will be their constant companion if they use it properly.

I concluded by telling the kids that the priesthood is so important. We are lucky to have a daddy that is worthy to have it. They seemed to understand (and Goofy was much nicer to daddy the rest of the night).
