A few weeks ago I made this cute little house for our family home evening rotation. My kids love being a bigger part of family home evening.
This week Princess was in charge of the lesson (with a little help from mommy). She explained that scriptures are the words of the prophets that have been put into a book. They teach about Jesus and the gospel.
She held up a picture of each of the books of scripture we have today: The Bible, The Book of Mormon, The Doctrine & Covenants, and The Pearl of Great Price. She told us a little bit about each book. For example: she explained the Bible is broken up into two parts - The Old Testament and The New Testament.
Once she was done explaining a little about each book, we taped them up to the entertainment center so everyone could see.
On the last piece of paper are all of the books in The Book of Mormon. Mommy's part of the lesson was to teach a song. I taught the kids The Books in the Book of Mormon (Children's Songbook p. 119). We sang it over and over again pointing at the different books on the paper as we sang.
Then, I cut the paper into strips and mixed up the books in The Book of Mormon so they were not in order. We put them back together as a family (mommy and daddy only helped a little).
Princess thinking hard.
There it goes!
Princess really took the lead putting the books back in the right order. I was very impressed.
As our final activity I would name books in The Book of Mormon and we practiced finding them in the scriptures. I have found working in primary that many kids cannot navigate through the scriptures very well. I want to make sure that my children can. Princess smiled proudly whenever she found the right book.
Sometimes it surprises me how much my 4 year old and 2 year old grasp the concepts taught. Princess loved being in charge of the lesson. I can't wait to have her teach again!
