Itsy Bitsy Spider Preschool Lesson

This little lesson includes a craft and a treat the kids are sure to love.

Lesson Focuses:

• Lowercase i
• "Out" rhyming words
• Fine motor skills (gluing)
• Following basic directions

Materials Needed:

• The Itsy Bitsy Spider - lyrics printed out and laminated
• Lowercase letter "i" printed out
• Dry erase boards
• Dry erase marker
• A basic spider web printout 
• Glue
• Glitter
• Oreos
• Pretzels
• Chocolate Chips
• Paint chip flip chart pieces

Singing Time

I started the lesson by teaching the kids the song The Itsy Bitsy Spider.  We sang it through a couple of times.  You can have the kids practice singing it loudly/softly, boys/girls only, or just with actions (mouthing the words).  

Letter and Writing Practice

Then, I showed the kids the lowercase letter "i."  We all practiced making the short "i" sound.  I gave the kids dry erase boards and markers.  They practiced writing their lowercase i's.  

When they had each written at least 5 lowercase i's we went through the lyrics of The Itsy Bitsy Spider and found each lowercase letter "i."  The kids had fun circling them with dry erase markers.  

Art

I had the kids head over to the table to create sparkly spider webs.  I gave them glue and told them to trace the lines of the spider web.  Then, we added glitter.  As you can see from the picture above, the gluing skills varied greatly from child to child.  

Snack 

I made these cute little spiders with Oreos, pretzels, and chocolate chips.  (These would also make a fun Halloween treat.)

The kids loved their little spider snacks!

Homework:

For their homework I gave the kids pieces to their paint chip rhyming word flip charts.  They were given the assignment to practice "out" rhyming words and to write a line of lowercase i's in their composition notebooks.
