Jesus is the Light of the World - FHE Lesson

"Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life."  - John 8:12

In this month's issue of The Friend magazine there was a great advent calendar about The Light of Christ at Christmas.  I especially liked the idea of turning off all of the lights in the house and going room to room singing Christmas songs and turning on the lights (Dec. 14 on the calendar).  I decided to do it for a family home evening (FHE) lesson.

We started our lesson upstairs in the girls' room.  I turned off all of the lights.  First, I asked the girls how it makes them feel when it's dark.  They gave answers like: scared, afraid, and alone.

I turned on 5 tea light candles.  I gave a candle to each of my children.  Then, I asked them how it feels when it is light.  Princess said it made her feel happy and safe.

We read John 8:12 and talked about how Jesus is the light of the world.  I explained that when we choose to follow Jesus is makes us feel warm and happy, but when we don't choose the right we feel dark and yucky inside.

After our discussion, we sang different Christmas songs from the hymn book to help us keep Jesus in our minds and hearts.  Here are the songs we sang (but there are so many other wonderful songs you could choose from): Away in a Manger, Silent Night, and Stars Were Gleaming (Children's Songbook).  We worked our way down to the living room.

I turned on the Christmas tree and we watched and listened to David Archuleta and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir sing Joy to the World.

At the end of the lesson I let the kids keep their candles and told them whenever they looked at the candles to remember Jesus and that we must follow Him if we want to return to Heavenly Father.  It was a very memorable, enjoyable, and meaningful family home evening lesson.

Enjoy listening to this wonderful rendition of Joy to the World!  (It's one of my favorites.)
