Dragon Birthday Cake

I always ask my kids what they would like me to make for their birthday cake.  Bud said he wanted a green cake.  Easy enough.  He chose to have a dragon-themed party, so I couldn't resist making a dragon birthday cake for him.

Thank goodness for Pinterest, because I wouldn't have known where to even begin to make a dragon shaped cake.  I found this dragon cake tutorial to make my little green dragon.  The only thing I did differently from the tutorial is that I used 2 mini doughnuts for the snout of the dragon.

One thing I learned while making this cake: spice cake is really hard to work with.  Bud picked out the spice cake himself, so I had to use it.  Even after being in the refrigerator it was super moist and crumbly.  I would suggest putting it in the freezer before trying to cut and frost a spice cake.

I used my vanilla butter frosting recipe (you can find it at the bottom of THIS post).  I seriously use this recipe for EVERY cake.

Once the frosting was on it was time to decorate!  I used a large marshmallow cut in half and brown M&M's for the eyes.  I then used banana runts for the eyebrows and claws.  Making the wings, horns, and scales was the trickiest part.  I followed these directions for candy melt wings and they worked out perfectly.  Make sure to make a few extra wings because one will inevitably break.  To make the scales I dipped Vanilla Wafers in the extra candy melt and let them harden on wax paper.

The final touch on this cake was the fire coming from his mouth.  Using Starbursts, I followed the directions HERE and it worked perfectly.

All done!

Bud absolutely LOVED his green dragon cake.
