Salt Dough Christmas Hand Print Ornaments

At Christmastime I like to add a new ornament to the tree.  I have wanted to make hand print ornaments for quite some time now.  This year I finally did it.

I found a wonderful recipe from You're So Martha.

I rolled out the dough, had each child press their hand into the dough, and cut out a mitten around the hand print.  I used a skewer to create the hole in the top.

With the leftover dough I let the kids cut out some Christmas shapes to bake.

Once they were dry we pulled out the acrylic paint.  I chose to do the hand print ornaments white so they would stand out on the tree.

The kids had a blast painting their ornaments.  Didn't they do a good job?

Once the paint dried I added ribbon and that's it.  I love the way they turned out!

The kids were so excited to have their own special ornaments.  Using a Sharpie marker I wrote their names and ages on the back.

So proud of her ornament.

Bud couldn't get enough of his ornament.  He kept trying to take it off of the tree.

Make your own keepsake ornament.

Salt Dough Recipe
(From You're So Martha)
1 c flour
1/2 c salt
1/2 c water

Mix ingredients together and knead dough for 7-10 minutes.  Roll out to your desired thickness on a floured surface.  Make ornaments with cookie cutters, etc.  Use a skewer to poke holes at the top.  Bake for a few hours (I did mine for 2) at 200 degrees.  You can air dry them for a few days if you prefer.  Paint/decorate your ornaments and string with a ribbon.
